Workers would bring the train in 4 cars at a time over terminal unloading pits, open the gates on each car, allow the car to empty, and then close each of the gates. This required significant labour hours, and an average of 4 days to unload 100 cars.
Techbrew worked with Calbrandt to develop an automated system that allows strings of cars to be unloaded without stopping. Travelling at speeds up to 80 feet per minute, the system locates and tracks each capstan using 3D machine vision; robotically rotating the found capstans, it then automatically opens each gate for unloading, then closes them upon exiting the terminal. This automated process can unload 100 cars in 4 hours that previously required 4 days.
